Hidden Gems: 20th Century Faces

A new exhibition of portraits from the 20th century will open at Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, on Friday 28 August 2009.

This family-friendly exhibition will capture the changing face of the 20th century through portraits from the Russell-Cotes collection, many of which are not on permanent display.

Pictures by well-known artists, such as Augustus John, Henry Lamb, John Minton and Stanley Spencer are featured. There are also some famous faces to spot, including those from the worlds of royalty and entertainment.

The exhibition includes the ‘Wall of Faces’ and a selection of miniature portraits. Themes explore childhood, self-portraits and artists in their studios. 

The exhibition reflects the dramatic changes of the 20th century; the years between 1900 and the 1960s saw the end of the Victorian era and the start of space exploration.  In between there were world wars, new democracies and great leaps forward in science and technology.

Occupations represented in the exhibition include nurses, flower-sellers, newspaper boys, vicars, sailors and soldiers.  Changing fashions are also reflected in the portraits which span from the 1900s to the 1960s.

The exhibition features some key works, including ‘Painter and Model’ by John Minton (1953); ‘The Open Window – These are My Jewels’ by William Ranken; and ‘David, Viscount Drumlanrig’ (1936) by Catherine Mann. 

There is a creative activities area in the gallery where visitors of all ages can create their own self-portraits and display them in the exhibition.

Admission to the exhibition is free. Donations are welcome. Open Tuesday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays, 10am to 5pm.

2. Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in Bournemouth is a dramatic experience for visitors.  The exuberance and variety of styles found within the building creates a unique atmosphere that is a mixture of both private house and public museum.  Created by two dedicated collectors, the Russell-Cotes is a museum of national importance.

The galleries display a regularly changing programme of significant art. Famous permanent artworks include Dante Gabriel Charles Rossetti’s Venus Verticordia (oil on canvas (1864-68)) which has toured the world as one of the UK’s most acclaimed works of art.
