Minister Plenipotentiary opens exhibition at Russell-Cotes

Manga to Mural – the Japanese Sketches of John Thomas

The exhibition Manga to Mural – the Japanese Sketches of John Thomas will be officially opened by Mr. Wataru Nishigahiro, the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of Japan on Monday 16 February 2009 at 3pm at Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, UK.

The Minister Plenipotentiary will be officially welcomed to the Borough by the Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Stephen Chappell, before the official opening takes place. As a Shakespeare enthusiast, the Minister has also asked to be shown around the museum’s Henry Irving collection as part of his itinerary. Irving was a famous Shakespearean actor in the 1800s.

The Manga to Mural exhibition explores the work of a Victorian decorative artist who was commissioned by Sir Merton and Lady Russell-Cotes to paint Japanese art-inspired glass and murals in their home. The exhibition is part of ‘Japan-UK 150’, celebrating 150 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and the United Kingdom.

The exhibition is funded by Renaissance, the MLA’s programme to transform England’s regional museums.

NOTES TO EDITORS

1. Japan-UK 150 is a series of events being held across the UK celebrating 150 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and the UK. On 26 August 1858 fully-fledged diplomatic relations between Japan and the United Kingdom were established as a result of the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce in Edo (the present Tokyo).

2. Renaissance: Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum is one of five hub museums in the south west participating in the MLA’s “Renaissance in the Regions” programme to transform England’s regional museums. Central government funding since 2002 is enabling regional museums across the country to raise their standards and deliver real results in support of education, learning, community development and economic regeneration. 

3. Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in Bournemouth is a dramatic experience for many visitors.  The exuberance and variety of styles found within the building creates a unique atmosphere that is a mixture of both private house and public museum.  Created by two dedicated collectors, the Russell-Cotes is a museum of national importance.
