Russell-Cotes Strips Off

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, in Bournemouth, has launched its new exhibition Stripped: the body beautiful.

The exhibition runs until 1 January 2012 and features work from sculptor, Jon Edgar, and artist, Jonathan Yeo, as well as sculptures, paintings and objects from the museum’s collection.

The exhibition is a celebration of the human body in all its forms from the Victorian era to the present day. Based in a Mediterranean classical garden it explores the Victorians’ changing attitude towards the naked form and looks at the modern attitude to the naked body. Visitors are encouraged to look at and challenge perceptions of beauty. Highlights of the exhibition include a bodice dating from the 1600s and a model, made from an original cast, of the hand of Lady Emma Hamilton, Lord Nelson’s lover.

Councillor Ian Lancashire, Cabinet Member for Arts and Culture, said,

“When the Russell-Cotes’ first started their fabulous collection many of these items would have been controversial and would have challenged the attitudes of their day. I’m delighted that Bournemouth is home to such an interesting collection and proud that the work by new artists in this exhibition follows in that same tradition.”

The exhibition is open to the public Tuesday – Sunday, 10 am to 5pm. Admission charges apply. Alternatively, visitors can join the new membership scheme, offering excellent value and the chance to help support and be a part of the future of the historic and internationally-renowned museum.  For admission prices and a full list of the membership benefits and information visit the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum website www.russell-cotes.bournemouth.gov.uk or telephone 01202 451858.
