A-Z A Hand Book - Exhibition

10 February -  9 August 2009 

An exhibition of meaningful mosaic images by Cleo Mussi. A quiet moment of contemplation with any of these works and they begin to share some of their subtle secrets – themes of loss, love, divinity, fear and retribution – the world of fairy tale. This is why Cleo is probably the leading exponent of mosaic art and why you should spend some quiet time alone with her work.

Hidden Gems – 20th Century Faces - Exhibition

26 August 2009 – April 2010

An exhibition of some of the hidden gems from the museum’s collections, focusing on portraiture of the 20th Century. From the small to the large, and from the traditional to the contemporary, with a little bit of the bizarre thrown in, the exhibition will embrace different genres and medium exciting a range of tastes.

Manga to Mural – the Japanese Sketches of John Thomas - Exhibition

17 February 2009 - April 2010

Exploring the work of John Thomas, the artist who created the breathtaking murals and hand-painted glass in the Russell-Cotes' museum-home. Thomas was inspired by the work of some of the great Japanese artists of the early 19th Century, such as Hokusai, Bairei, Zeshin.

Family Explorer Travel Bags

Available daily during opening hours from the museum’s information desk

 

An exciting interactive way to discover more about the museum and its collections. Jam-packed full of objects, activities, sounds and even smells, with three themes to choose from! Young people take on the role of an explorer, with a special bag of activities and objects and clear instructions. They even get to wear a special explorer's hat!

 

Become a Wildlife Explorer and go ‘bird-watching’ in the Drawing Room and ‘animal hunting’ on the balcony! Worldwide Explorers will discover the tantalising aromas of the East and learn about the traditional treasures of New Zealand! Whilst the Museum Explorer will discover the hidden workings of a museum through activities such as measuring light levels!

Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in Bournemouth is a dramatic experience for many visitors.  The exuberance and variety of styles found within the building creates a unique atmosphere that is a mixture of both private house and public museum.  Created by two dedicated collectors, the Russell-Cotes is a museum of national importance.

 

The galleries display a regularly changing programme of significant art. Famous permanent artworks include Dante Gabriel Charles Rossetti’s Venus Verticordia (oil on canvas (1864-68)) which has toured the world as one of the UK’s most acclaimed works of art.
