Views of Bournemouth
21 May – 31 October 2010
A visual excursion through 200 years of the town. This partnership exhibition with Bournemouth Arts Club celebrates the town’s bicentenary year. Over the past 200 years Bournemouth has evolved from heath land scrub to a bustling centre of tourism and business. The objects, paintings and photographs in this exhibition capture different views of the town, from different perspectives. This exhibition presents an opportunity to purchase original ‘Views of Bournemouth’ artworks by Bournemouth Arts Club. A series of associated talks take place throughout the exhibition’s run:

Night at the Museum
Friday 14 May, 6 – 9pm
A special late opening when visitors are invited to step back in time to the early 1900s for an evening with actors Annie and Merton Russell-Cotes, as their home is brought to life. A candlelit atmosphere and the views over Bournemouth bay create an enchanting experience. Part of the UK’s Museums at Night celebrations (see Editors’ notes below).
Entry £3 adults, £2 children, on the door.
A Victorian Christmas
Thursday 16 December, 7 – 9.30pm
With a musical programme by The Orlando Singers from 7.30 to 9pm.
The Victorian house will be transformed with a special candlelit Christmas atmosphere. Live choral music will be performed throughout the evening. Costumed actors will enhance the event and mince pies and mulled wine will be on sale in the café-bar. (Please note this isn’t a seated performance).

NOTES TO EDITORS
1.Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in Bournemouth is a dramatic experience for many visitors. The exuberance and variety of styles found within the building creates a unique atmosphere that is a mixture of both private house and public museum. Created by two dedicated collectors, the Russell-Cotes is a museum of national importance. A virtual look around the house is available online at www.russell-cotes.bournemouth.gov.uk.
2. Museums at Night 2010 Museums at Night Weekend will take place over the weekend of Friday 14 to Sunday 16 May and the Europe-wide celebration will be on Saturday 15 May.
3. La Nuit des Musées was introduced by the French Culture Department in 2005 to succeed Printemps des Musées and takes place on the Saturday nearest to International Museums Day (May 18). This event is supported by the Council of Europe and UNESCO. In 2009, over 2,500 museums in 41 European countries took part.
4. Renaissance is the MLA’s ground-breaking programme to transform England’s regional museums. Central government funding since 2002 is enabling regional museums across the country to raise their standards and deliver real results in support of education, learning, community development and economic regeneration. Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum is one of the museums which make up the Renaissance South West Hub.
5. Bournemouth Arts Club: From its inception in 1920, the Bournemouth Arts Club (BAC) has provided a focus of excellence for the visual arts by bringing together those who practise with those maintaining a lively interest in current developments. It is a fusion of proud tradition with evolution which brings BAC into the 21st Century. www.bournemouthartsclub.co.uk

6. Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum was the home of Sir Merton Russell-Cotes (1835-1921) and Lady Russell-Cotes (1835-1920). The wealthy couple used their home to display the interesting objects that they collected during their world travels.
7. In 1907 Sir Merton and Lady Russell-Cotes said that they were giving their home, art collection and beautiful objects to the Bournemouth people. In 1909 the house was officially opened to the public. In 1919 four art galleries were built and joined to the house. The Russell-Cotes continued to live in the house until their deaths.
